Zachte Winter Festival at the Plein Theater!

From December 19 to 30 there will be a heart-warming program at the Plein Theater for all ages during our Zachte Winter Festival! The festival includes puppetry performances for the whole family, storytelling, comedy, creative workshops, hotchpotch with a twist from Peggy's Kitchen, the Amsterdam Winter Stable in the OBA Oosterdok and an end-of-year gathering for the entire neighborhood. We would like to end 2024 on an ultra-soft note with local residents, visitors, their (chosen) family and children. This festival is for everyone who believes in the power of radical softness, the theme of our Winter Festival this year. With this we want to provide a powerful counter-voice to the world that is often dominated by hard facts and quick judgments.

Radical softness is more than just a feeling: it is an attitude to life that invites vulnerability, authenticity and empathy. It asks us to open our hearts. In these cold months we want to create warmth and solidarity through stories that connect us.

We start the Zachte Winter Festival with a personal storytelling evening Gurbet - or how I became rich by Soula Notos on Thursday, December 19 and an English-language comedy evening by easylaughs on Friday evening, December 20.

You can experience the best family getaways with the puppetry performances Dwars door het beton (4+) by Theater Kwikstaart from December 21 to 24 and Het Geweldige Grote Mensen Stuk (8+) by Cat Smits Company on December 27, 28 and 29! As a bonus, after the performances between 17:00 and 19:00, there are creative workshops in the café, such as making your own tote bag, decorating Christmas baubles and knitting/crocheting.

Between performances, you can enjoy delicious hotchpotch with a twist (and a soft price) by chef Peggy Burke! We also make the Amsterdam Winter Stable, a large, colorful knitting project in the OBA, possible.

At the end of the festival, on Monday evening, December 30, we will close the year together with the cozy Zachte Winter end-of-year gathering in the café of the Plein Theater! The entire neighborhood and surrounding areas are invited.

Soula Notos

The storytelling evening Gurbet - or how I became rich is a personal story by Soula Notos about migration, warm hands, wealth, and the in-between: the in-between space where many biculturals find themselves. A space where there is always a desire and where you are always on the go, but it seems as if you never arrive. But is it all doom and gloom? Maybe, just maybe, the in-between isn't so bad after all.

easylaughs

Plein Theater hosts English-language improvisation comedy shows from easylaughs! In this holiday edition, students showcase the next step in their improv journey and the whole easylaughs cast comes to play and make it a festive party to end the year!

Theater Kwikstaart

Dwars door het beton is a musical, visual multimedia youth theater performance. A contemporary family show about moving, feeling at home and shaping a new world. With an ever-expanding world for people, we sometimes forget that animals and nature also need a home. The story fits within the experience of children aged four years and older and responds to larger themes such as making friends, opening yourself up and the relationship between people and nature.

Het Geweldige Grote Mensen Stuk (8+)
Cat Smits Company

Het Geweldige Grote Mensen Stuk is a cheerful, musical, honest and, above all, funny performance about serious matters. Because whether you like it or not, you have to deal with a lot of grown-ups in your life as a child. They are your parents, your friends' parents, your teachers, your doctor, the pizza baker around the corner, the bus driver, your neighbors. They are everywhere! And they are often quite bossy. But in this performance, Broc and the children are completely in charge. Yes!!

Studio Brei in collaboration with OBA and Plein Theater

The Amsterdam Winter Stable offers residents the opportunity to not only contribute to a large, colorful knitting project, but also to incorporate their own stories and ideas into the work of art. Together with Studio Brei, the stable is filled with Amsterdam figures and urban stories, knitted by and for Amsterdam residents. The unveiling will take place on December 21 in the OBA Oosterdok, where the stable can be visited in the Central Hall until January 5, 2025.

Zachte Winter End-of-the-year get together!

Hotchpotch with a twist from Peggy's Kitchen

During our Zachte Winter Festival we will not only warm you with theater and stories, but also with delicious food! Our chef Peggy Burke is serving hotchpotch with a twist this Christmas holidays – which are prepared with lots of love!

Peggy's Kitchen in the Plein Theater not only connects flavors, but also people and stories and is a place to meet up. Our hotchpotch are therefore more than a meal; they are a fusion of flavors, cultures and stories from the neighborhood.

From a spicy Moroccan hotchpotch to a surprising Indian hotchpotch, and from a classic beetroot hotchpotch with apple to a Mexican version with beans and guacamole – there is something delicious for every taste, dietary requirement and age.

Connect offline by joining the table and eat together; to make this accessible to as many people as possible, we offer the hotchpotch for a special soft price.

The hotchpotches are available on program days during the Christmas holidays before or after the performance - and can be ordered online in advance, just like your theater ticket.
