From November 13 to 17, the Plein Theater presents a special program around the work of dance pioneer Pauline de Groot. With various meetings, presentations and an exhibition, the work of Pauline de Groot, and its significance for (post)modern dance in the Netherlands, will be extracted from the archives.

Contemporary choreographers Antonia Steffens (together with Tiana Hemlock-Yensen) and Elisa Zuppini each present a choreographic proposal based on their research in the archive of Pauline de Groot.

Pauline de Groot, pioneer in dance

Pauline de Groot is one of the pioneers of (post)modern dance in the Netherlands. She lived in America between 1957 and 1964, where she studied in the studios of Graham and Cunningham, worked with Erick Hawkins and José Limón, and met many important innovators of American dance, music and other arts. Until the 2000s, De Groot created more than fifty choreographies and initiated countless improvisation events.

To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the School for New Dance Development, SNDO, De Nieuwe Dansbibliotheek, Stichting Podiumkunst.net and the Plein Theater in Amsterdam have joined forces to organize a three-day festival and an exhibition around the work of Pauline de Groot. Contemporary choreographers Antonia Steffens and Elisa Zuppini each present a choreographic proposal based on their research in the archive of Pauline de Groot.

Discussions will also be held with audiences and guests from different generations about the artistic legacy of Pauline de Groot.

During the exhibition in the Plein Theater, all kinds of materials from the archive will be on display, from original posters and dance scores to photo and video work.

The festive opening of the exhibition will take place on Wednesday, November 13, with the launch of a new website with the personal archives of Pauline de Groot and the presentation of the booklet from the series 'Conversations with makers' by De Nieuwe Dansbibliotheek about Pauline de Groot. The exhibition in the foyer of the Plein Theater can be seen until December 8.
