Buque Azart

The theater ship Azart "The Ship of Fools" has sailed the world's seas for thirty-three years as Amsterdam Ambassador of its maritime traditions and contemporary theater forms. Azart presented her performances in more than two hundred cities on three continents with a changing, international crew of artists, who often signed on along the way. In 1994 her then berth on the KSMN island was named after the ship "Azartplein".

In a small Ecuadorian port, the pandemic put an end to the world tour, prompting the skipper to look for a way to maintain her function as a theater ship.

With the cooperation of Plein Theater and the preserved international collaborations of Theater Embassy, a final destination has been found for the Theaterschip Azart “Ship of Fools”. The ship was given as a gift to the Ecuadorian theater group Corporacion Humor y Vida, and is being given a new adventure!

Corporacion Humor y Vida turns the Ship Azart into a cultural center on San Mateo beach, Ecuador's first theater boat! Buque Azart brings culture, art and development to the province of Manabí and all of Ecuador.

On March 27 2022, International Theater Day and six months after the landing on the beach, the grand opening will take place in the presence of the mayor and the cultural authorities of the city, who gave the project a concession of 2000 m2 for 25 years. And so the current story of Amsterdam's "Azartplein" continues on "Playa Azart", a beach in Ecuador. And Plein Theater has an sister stage on the equator!
